Rokeby Avenue Residence
Garrett Park, MD
This modern farmhouse is a study in contextual design, balancing heritage, sustainability, and contemporary living. Oriented to maximize sweeping woodland views, the home maintains the warmth and character of the original farmhouse while integrating seamlessly into the historic fabric of Garrett Park. The design introduces generous wraparound decks and screened-in porches, fostering a deep connection to the surrounding landscape while minimizing site disturbance. Thoughtful preservation efforts safeguarded three stately 40-foot poplar trees, ensuring their continued presence as defining elements of the site. Sustainability was a guiding principle, with all existing roof framing meticulously repurposed throughout the home to reduce construction waste. A newly constructed detached accessory dwelling unit (ADU) enhances the property's functionality, featuring a spacious one-bedroom apartment perched above a garage, while a terraced garden mediates the transition between structures, creating a fluid dialogue between built and natural environments. The resulting composition is a refined expression of the modern farmhouse vernacular—rooted in history, attuned to nature, and thoughtfully crafted for contemporary living.
