Joe’s Movement Emporium
Performing Arts Center
Mt. Rainier, MD
Joe’s, a cultural arts and performance hub in Mt. Rainier, transformed its gravel parking lot into a functional outdoor venue in response to COVID-19. The redesign improves drainage while creating inviting performance and gathering spaces.
A new stage, framed by a backdrop of upcycled doors, anchors the space, while an ADA-accessible path, play areas, and a cascading rain garden enhance functionality and sustainability. Gathering decks beneath a shade tree provide welcoming social spaces, and at the site’s lowest point, plantings aid in stormwater absorption.
Sustainability is key, with a 6,000-square-foot green roof and solar panels reducing the heat island effect and improving energy efficiency. The revitalized space seamlessly supports Joe’s cultural mission while prioritizing environmental resilience and community engagement.
