A Street Residence
Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.
This early 1900s brick rowhome is being transformed from a single-family residence into a two-family flat through a series of strategic additions that expand the footprint at the cellar, first, and second floors. A newly constructed third floor maximizes the site's usable space while enhancing functionality. The cellar level serves as an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), designed for comfort with wood floors, a gas fireplace, and classic finishes that reflect the home's historic character. The upper unit is reimagined with a spacious, light-filled kitchen, a central feature stair, and a new third-floor addition that offers an indoor/outdoor entertainment space.
On the exterior, the renovation preserves and enhances key historic elements, including the mansard roof, cornice, dentil molding, and brick detailing, ensuring the home maintains its architectural integrity while adapting to modern living.
